Always wear boxer shorts or boxer briefs where possible.

If you need a bit more support briefs may be more practical. Wear what you feel comfortable in. It's not like anyone's going to know what you have on underneath.
References :
It really depends on the area that they are based in. The country and rural areas are called only when needed. The larger cities usually work 12 hours a day. If they are short handed the shifts could be longer. The only sure way to find out is to go to the fire house closest to you and ask. Most places will be glad to answer all your questions. Not be afraid to ask.
References :
Ex landlord was a firefrighter.

It pretty much depends on the day. Fire Fighters work as much as they're needed, such as fires and emergencies and sometimes car crashes. So if there's no fires or anything in a day, then they don't go anywhere at all, and if there's a fire only once, they go only once. It all depends on how much they're needed on that specific day. However, they still stay at the fire station during their hours, as they never know when they're needed, and most of the time, they're needed almost immediately. (Which is why they're at the station all the time...). They also do alot of other stuff like maintenence and cleaning and blah. ^^; So they're still paid hours, but they 'work' on their job as much as they are required to. (Or how long their shift is...)
References :
Went to a couple fire station tours in different areas.
