How do I go about becoming a paramedic?

Posted on July 14th, 2010 by admin

In New York State who can I go to to learn about becoming a paramedic? I’ve always wanted to be one but I have no idea how or who to talk to. I know I have to become an EMT first, but how do I do that? There’s only one community college within an hour of me that offers the training and I don’t really know what to say to them or how to go about approaching them. Please help!

One of my friends is a paramedic, you are right, you need to become an EMT first. in order to become an EMT you need to go and get the proper training, I do not live in ny state so I am not sure where those are over there but yes you need to take classes and rack up volunteer hours at a local hospital. Then you need to volunteer at a First Aid Squad where sometimes you will spend the whole night. Wherever you take the classes they should be able to write you a nice recommendation. You will need to study a lot and give up a lot of your free time volunteering. It is a very interesting and rewarding experience from what I hear. So take the classes and volunteer. Tell them you are interested in helping people and becoming a Doctor someday (if you are) and tell them you would really like the experience and to know what to do in an emergency situation. Good luck, sorry for the lengthy answer

What are the main things that a paramedic in the navy deals with?

Posted on July 11th, 2010 by admin

I am training to be a Paramedic/ nurse in the navy and i just wanted to know a little more about what i am getting myself into.
Thanks

Better get more info. Nurses are officers and are recruited already trained from nursing school. Enlisted folks are known as hospital corpsmen and can be assigned to darn near any duty found in a hospital except doctors and nurses. Could be x-rays, pharmacy, sweeping the floor, or darn near anything else. Life is as variable as assignments. Could be part of 10 man medical department on a carrier, or a two person department on a smaller ship, or could be in a huge hospital or a tiny clinic.

Can a paramedic operate a clinic, treating and diagnosing patients?

Posted on July 8th, 2010 by admin

A paramedic here owns and operates a clinic in which he does physicals (DOT) and passes or disqualifies according to his preference, not DOT regulations. He says he owns the place and can do what he wants and has a "ghost" doctor that name shows up on a prescription when you get one.

Yes, paramedics have a limited license to practice medicine. He may be limited to doing DOT examinations. But he is legally required to follow that state’s guidelines. He cannot ignore them. If he is truly following "his preferences, not DOT regulations" then he could lose his license to practice. If he were in my state, and I knew that he was doing this, then be sure that I would report him!

A Paramedic’s Song

Posted on July 5th, 2010 by admin

This song somehow captures the stark reality of an actual life and death situation encountered and dealt with by a solo paramedic responder.
Crosby & Nash………Lay Me Down

Paramedics must fit medical procedures into their work context and consequently, paramedics practice a unique type of care referred to in their occupational literature as prehospital care and transportation of the sick and injured. This care is provided outside of any formal institution, which means in plain language that they practice in the street and perform in a context rife with chaotic, dangerous, and often uncontrollable elements with which hospital-based practitioners need not contend.

What kind of personality and traits, skills do you need to become a paramedic ?

Posted on July 5th, 2010 by admin

I’ve been wondering if I’d be suited to be a paramedic
I love to help people , I get all A’s and B’s in school , I”m athletic and sporty. And I’m a volunteer firefighter.
Would I be suited for being a paramedic ?
What other skills do you need to be a paramedic ?
What kind of schooling in Canada do you need to become one ?

thanks

You sound like a perfect match. Of course working in fire fighting you can increase your salary tons by just becoming a Paramedic as well. The thrive to help people is the reason people become Paramedics. Good grades show that you are able to apply yourself and focus on schooling and that is what it takes for the schooling aspect of Paramedicine. There is lots of hands on learning as well but it seems as though you can pick that up. Being athletic and sporty helps tremendously to have the ability to do the manual part of the job as there is lots of lifting and to be fit will help you refrain from injury with proper lifting technique. I would say you are suited. I am not completely up dated with the terms of Paramedicine in Canada but as for National Registry for all Paramedics and from state to state there are numerous classroom hours to complete as well as, clinical hours that are required. Then there is an overall exam to get a Paramedic license. The best way to find out exactly what is required of you is to contact your local college or nearby to see what they have available. Always remember that job shadowing is always an option too for a few shifts to see if it what you expect. I always suggest that because it is really a taste of the job to create better expectations of what you are entering and then EMS Crews are always a great source of information on different options and a great support system to help you while you are in school. Good Luck!!

Does a paramedic have to be a firefighter?

Posted on July 2nd, 2010 by admin

Wondering if someone can be a paramedic without having to be a firefighter, and not a volunteer service. Is it a good job and what does it pay?

no, the vast majority of Paramedics are not firefighters. Pay wise, well that all depends on the company hiring you, your area ect.. but it isn’t all that wonderful, which is why many Paramedics either move on or go Fire.

Can a paramedic work as a nurse tech in the hospital?

Posted on June 28th, 2010 by admin

i am a paramedic on the road, but would like to get into nursing, i am wondering if a paramedic can work as a nurse tech. I also work as a CNA at a hospital and am trying to get them to make me a Nurse Tech. since i am a lisc. paramedic. Usually they only make nursing students nurse techs but I hold an actual lisc. and have more training then 1st year nursing students. Let me know.

Every career or job position has certain requirements , license, and/ or diploma.Hence, you have your license as a paramedic(after a certain amount of training and instruction). This is to protect everyone involved—the public and the employer.Your level of knowledge or experience in another related field is not relevant unless you want to take the requisite courses or training to enter that field.A CNA, for instance, assists nurses(take B/ps, vital signs etc) but can not claim to be nurses regardless of how much post -school experience they may have or the knowledge they may have gleaned from watching nurses. The same thing applies to you. If you do decide to become a nurse, your being a paramedic would help you in the process by reducing the time you spend in school and so on.I hope this information has helped you a little.
