Is true that some fire departments are cross training firefighters and EMT’s?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

Hi, I would like to know if it is true that some fire departments are cross training firefighters and EMT’s? If so why? Please let me know thank you.

its like, why would you pay for the cake without the frosting? If you can get them both in one package it would be alot better, right? FFs and EMTs all reside at the Fire Department. (in some cities) Therefor having someone certified as an EMT who is a FF makes everyones jobs much easier, and saves the city money (mainly). In CA most cities i know of you have to be certified as both. EMTs are mainly working in the ER if they are not FFs here. Also the ambulance always comes with a firetruck, and vise versa.

How can I find out whether my mattress meets the fire safety regulations required of a landlord?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

I’m renting my flat and have an old mattress for the tenant. However, I’m not sure how to identify if it meets the fire safety regulations. Would anyone know where I could find out?

If its fire resistant it will have a label attached. if its not there you cannot chance it.

How to switch doctor/paramedic for martial arts tournament?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

For years our ‘family’ of martial arts schools have used a certain person for the medical official we’re required to keep in case of injuries. This guy is a Jr. Master, taekwondo instructor, and Dr. But he’s a chiropractor doctor, not a medical or emergency care doctor.

I co-run a tournament, and the other directors agree that we want to get someone with emergency care expertise, but we’re afraid of offending him.

How do I politely ask Dr. Master Chiropractor to step aside for a paramedic or better experienced doctor?

First off,

Getting a paramedic team on standby is a must. This can be done with minor coordination and expense with a local hospital.

I would keep the Chiro on hand just as I would additional trainer staff. You don’t want to yell the paramedics over for simple things that can be fixed on the spot.

Another GREAT idea is if you have a local university handy, especially one with a sports team as they all have trainer programs. People who are accustomed to and are training to handle sport specific injuries. Having a few students from a local sports trainer program can also make things easier.

I think it is easy to just be an adult with the Chiro, I am sure he won’t mind for a tournament if there are emergency medical staff, and sports injury training staff. I would ask him to fulfill an advisory capacity in helping you get qualified people for these roles. Let him be the medical advisor, safety or medical coordinator. In fact, if you are afraid offending him, then by placing him in charge of safety and having him coordinate to get the right medical staff, you are moving him up.

This helps put the pressure off him in regards to having to run out on the mat, and puts his medical training to best use as basically a head doctor of the tournament. Allowing EMTs, and training staff to do the real medical work as needed and allowing him to oversee it.

That is a great way to present it to him, by simply asking him to have a "bigger role" and being the advisor/coordinator for medical purposes.

Of course, you could just talk to him and see how he feels about the whole thing and how involved he feels.

How is your local fire department organized?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

How is your local fire department organized?
What are the various ranks within the department?
What career opportunities exist within the fire department?
What are the requirements for becoming a fire fighter?
What are the negative aspects of the job

Most fire departments in the United States are organized by volunteers. Some places can even afford to have them "on call" or in the station during particularly hazardous times.
It is typical to have firefighters supervised by lieutenants, some of whom may report to a captain. They all report to the Chief (and deputy, if any), who reports to the mayor, or commissioner, or board of selectmen.
Training includes all the materials necessary for certification under NFPA standards for the particular kind of firefighting involved (structure, wildland, airport, HAZMAT, etc).
Each department has its own criteria for becoming a member; mine just wants you to show up for a few hours of training each month and go to as many calls as you can. You have to be 18 and not have a criminal or mental record.

Are women unable to do their jobs when they become fire fighters?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

I hear so many men complaining that they had to lower the standards so women could qualify. So does this mean that they become fire fighters and then just get paid for standing around and watching?

Women in the upper 25 percentile among women in size, strength and fitness are the target group for firefighters. But, with physical conditioning 50% of females qualify essentially equally with 50% of males. The U.S. military just completed a component of a huge research project related to physical conditioning in females and found that with physical conditioning / training, women meet the same standards as do the same percentage of males. Many private enterprises are cashing in right now on providing highly successful female conditioning programs for occupations including firefighting and military service. I’m invested in one.

Back in the 1950’s, widespread changes occured within firefighting related to intelligence and ability to read among male firefighters. Over 50% of exisitng firefighters failed to meet the new standards. But, with catch-up programs similar to physical conditioning programs today for women, over 78% of firefighters were able to meet the new standards. There was a tremendous outcry, though, against the new standards. Firefighters were convinced that knowing how to read at a certain level was not necessary to be a firefighter. They had an outdated notion of the definition of "firefighting". The roles, responsibilities, equipment and challenges facing firefighters were rapidly changing and new standards were thus imposed.

In the military, roles, responsibilities and equipment have rapidly been changing, too, and military research into the size / strength / fitness requirements for each task is changing the definition of many occupations and redefining what standards are actually important for either males or females. For example, the average women could not pull the ejection switch in a jet. Research learned that, first, the problem is easily remedied by positioning the switch a few inches higher for leverage. And, THEN, a real brainiac came along and said, "Hey! Why are we still using that piece of worthless crap designed in 1940 when there’s an easier way to trigger the ejection process?" Duh.

But, you’ll still hear people using that "criteria" of a trigger switch that women "fail" to be able to pull, thus, women are not "qualified" to be pilots. And, despite radical advances in firefighting techniques and equipment and the job diversification occuring in this field, the public still has outdated notions of what makes a good firefighter.

Here is an example of one of those new private businesses providing well-researched physical conditioning catch up training for females. Feminism needs to address why females are not as physically fit as they clearly CAN be:

How to talk to a fireman on sims 3?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

I want to have a pyromaniac baby so hoow can I talk and befriend a fireman? I have a woman sims 3 and I live in the town sunset valley. Where is the fire department located also.

There is no building for the fire department in Sunset Valley, but firemen will come to the house if:
A. There is an actual fire and a smoke alarm goes off
B. You direct a Sim to call one using the "Call for Services" option on the phone and then selecting Fire Department.

The Pyromaniac trait is not passed down 100% of the time- the baby may also inherit the Fireproof trait or neither of the two.

How do I become a Fire Fighter in Pennsylvania?

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by admin

Over the past few months I’ve been seriously considering becoming a firefighter and it seems like anywhere I go they don’t have a whole lot of information on how to do so. Ive tried calling the local fire departments but it just results in them putting me on hold until I get annoyed and hang up. Im looking for how to become a actual paid fire fighter not a volunteer one. Thank you any answers are greatly appreciated.

Have you tried online?
Bigger cities should have information on how to apply for or when the job openings come around. Sometimes the guys at the firehouse don’t know when the next test will be. Personnel should know. Be aware that some departments may have a test only once every two years or so.
Good luck.
